Cape Town welcomed the two neighbouring countries in the last encounter of the first knockout round. Real Madrid's star player facing both his coleagues and his rivals from Barcelona as Spain and Portugal engaged in an epic battle.
Only 15 minutes took Spain to score the opening goal, Torres finally finding the way to the opponent's penalty area. C. Ronaldo equalised soon after, briging the two teams together at 1-1 before the half time whistle. The second half was somewhat of a exhausting fight for the ball, neither of the teams gaining a creativity advantage. Everything ended for Portugal when majestic Villa gathered his forces and unleashed a thunderous strike from around 30m right in the top corner of a hopeless Eduardo. There he was then, poor Ronaldo, crying like a baby after the final whistle. Thank you for that priceless image, Spain!

Will Paraguay join the other 3 South American countries in the quarter finals or will Japan be the only Asian team to go through?
It was a balanced encounter, with Japan looking slightly more lively, but with Paraguay having the biggest chances of scoring. First half ended as it started, with score at 0-0. It was the 63rd minute when everyone thought the game has ended for Paraguay, Alcaraz being sent off. Not much after it was Japan's turn to lose a player, when Endo received the second yellow card. And there they were, both teams down to 10 men, at the start of the first period of extra time. Japan took initiative, and after 2 missed chances, another free kick got them in advantage, 1-0. Honda's superb shot finally made the differnece, despite Paraguay struggling till the end.

Brazil vs Chile 2-1 a.e.t. (1-0 ht / 1-1 ft)
With Kaka in the starting line-up, the Brazilians had their ammunition in place but two cannons -Luis Fabiano and Robinho - were somewhat off-target. Luis Fabiano scored the only goal of the first half after a fast move originated by Kaka. Chile went right back in the game in the second half and finally managed to score one goal through Gonzalez. The incisive CSKA Moscow forward scored with a well placed shot from the edge of the box.
Seeing the game run into extra time is not what Brazil had expected. Dunga's team gathered what was left of their strength and scored the winning goal in the 103rd minute, setting themselves up for a quarter-final against The Netherlands in which they're likely to be less fresh than the Dutch.

NETHERLANDS vs. SLOVAKIA 3-0 (2-0)

ARGENTINA vs. MEXICO 3-1 (1-0)
It was to be the night of Messi. After 3 matches without scoring a goal, Lionel finally showed everyone what he's really capable of, despite being coached by Maradona. The match had a slow start, with both teams contemplating each other. Close to the first half end Messi started the show, taking a ball near the midfield line and dribbling his way into the penalty box where he unleashed a deadly shot, 1-0. Mexico just couldn't reply before half time.
It was 2-0 right after the beginning of the second half, Messi Magic did the trick again. Argentina finally won the match by two goals, Blanco reducing the lead, before Milito hitting the goal for the last time.

USA - Ghana 2-1 (0-1)
USA were once again under pressure after a rather balanced first half in which Ghana took full advantage of their chances, unlike their opponents. It was 1-0 for the Africans thanks to Ayew's 20th minute goal. However, Ghana's first half efficiency was useless in the last part of the game, where they failed the test in front of an extremely offensive American team: Dempsey caused all sorts of problems for the African defence on his right wing and he finally managed to find the right pass for his team's first goal - when Altidore scored for 1-1. Ghana tried to push forward but the American defence was in good shape, especially Bocanegra who had some saving tackles. Donovan will surely be the new national hero in the U.S. after scoring the winning goal with only eight minutes remaining until the end of the game. The final was tense but USA goes through to the quarter finals after a close encounter.

SOUTH KOREA vs. URUGUAY 2-1 (1-1)
First match after the group stage faced the winner of Group A, Uruguay and South Korea, Group B runner up.
It was a close encounter with South Korea having the initiative, but Uruguay hitting them early on, 0-1. The equaliser came quickly with an impossible to save free kick. As proved in the early stages set pieces are the new speciality of Asian teams and the score at so the half time score stood at 1-1. The start of the second half had an identical course, Uruguay's top goalscorer, Forlan took advantage of a big error in the Asian defence and gave Uruguay the lead. The final score was 2-1, despite South Korea throwing everybody up.

Spain was confident after they won six and drawn one of their seven meetings with Chile and made no mistakes in this game also. They assured first place of the group through David Villa's top goals from the second half.
The Swiss lost 1-0 from Chile in the second group game, and now they needed to beat bottom-placed Honduras and await the result of Chile vs. Spain to learn their fate. They did their job defeating Honduras with 1-0 after a goal scored by Barnetta in the first half, but it wasn't enough to go through. Even though a draw was enough for Brazil in order to win the group, Dunga's boys caught a great day and showed us why they are favourites at the start of every world tournament. This was a great game to see, Brazil won the match with 4-2 after a 1-1 draw at the half time. In the second match of the group, the Elephants tried the miracle to reach the last 16, but for that, the africans needed a nine goal swing over the portuguese - in addition to win over the North Koreans and for Brazil over the Portugal. So, nine strikes separate Portugal and Côte d'Ivoire in goal-difference terms, so Didier Drogba and Co will be hoping Brazil can help them out by racking up a few efforts of their own. The Elephants did their best but not enough to qualify. They didn't succede to beat Portugal's record over Korea DPR, and stopped at 5 goals advantage.

It looks like the goal difference counted for the place in this group and the Japanese qualified for the last 16 after a 1-1 draw against Olsen's team.
The other group game was more simple. The Netherlands had their place guaranteed for the second round and Cameroon was unable to progress any further. Bert van Marwijk used the standard formula and Holland won the game in an easy manner. At half time they already had one goal advantage and in the the second half Kuyt made it 2-0. Let's see if they are strong enough this year.

Looking at the other fixture, Australia's lead (Bresciano) was cancelled before the 2nd half by Serbia's counterattack (Jovanovic). NIGERIA vs. SOUTH KOREA 2-1 (1-0)
GREECE vs. ARGENTINA 1-3 (0-2)
2nd offensive line of the South Americans entered today to show El Pibe d'Oro they are all worth a place in the starting lineup of what many still see as the future world champions. On the other hand Argentina is the only country in Group B that guaranteed its place in the last 16 before the last fixtures. Nigeria vs. South Korea might decide the other team that joins Messi & co. in the next stage, Greece seeming unable to cope with whatever 8 other players play along the trio Kun-Milito-Messi.
The games started as everyone would have guessed, a fast goal by Kun Aguero, and a family reunited by happiness on the sidelines. At the end of the first half it was Argentina and Nigeria to go forward, with the spectacular goals of Obasi and Veron.
South Korea quickly equalised in the start of the 2nd half, after a stunning header from Ji-Sung Park and things started to look complicated for the Africans. Obasi became the new national hero, after bringing Nigeria ahead with 5 minutes to go. Katsouranis's goal was no more than a consolation highlight, score being 0-3 already, Milito doing his job again, as Mourinho taught him to.

Italy vs New Zealand 2-0 (1-0)
Italy cruised to their first win in 2010 after two identical halves: Gilardino beat the crowded New Zealand defence after a wonderful through pass by de Rossi - 1-0. New Zealand had to open up more - and they did exactly that, but Smeltz couldn't take advantage of Buffon's absence. The New Zealand goalkeeper had problems with the troublesome Jabulani ball and he was finally beaten by Pepe's good cross for Iaquinta. New Zealand fought well but couldn't claim any points from the world champions.
Group F - Matchday 2
Slovakia vs. Paraguay 0-1 (0-1)
All four teams in Group F are tied on a single point, and with the Slovaks facing world champions Italy in the last match group, they surely took the game to Paraguay intersted only with the 3 points. So, this promised to be an entertaining game between two teams ready to win their first game at the 2010 FIFA World Cup and take a major stride towards the Round of 16.
Paraguay looked extremely organized and continued their successes at the half time, as they have done in their past two games. Roque Santa Cruz scored in the first half after a very well placed header. The slovaks tried to come back but they just weren't strong enough and remained with only one point after the first two matches of the group.

Cameroon vs. Denmark 1-0 (0-0)
Neither of the teams started their 2010 FIFA World Cup™ campaign the way they would have dreamt, with both pointless after opening game defeats. The Danes defeat on Monday against the Netherlands meant that Denmark have now lost their last three games and, perhaps more worryingly, have failed to score in any of those defeats. The team didn't look better in the last
game of the day also, and said goodbye from the african world cup dream. The first half was very tight, with both teams excepting the opponent's mistake. In the end, Cameroon won their first 3
points at the African World Cup, after Samuel Eto'o proved his worth and scored a magnificent goal from a short range after dribbling two european defenders. Final score, 1-0 for the african team which will face the already qualified Netherlands in the last round of the group stage.

Ghana vs Australia 1-1- (0-0)
The first half was rather poor in goal chances, except the injury of Annan which looked initially more serious than it turned out to be. Australia started the game without star player Cahill, but his absence wasn't felt since Kewell had an impressive second half, scoring his side's only goal after a good low cross by Bresciano. Ghana pushed throughout the whole game and finally equalised in the 65th minute when Ayew sent the ball past Schwarzer after dribbling past two defenders. It was an action-packed game in this complicated group, with Ghana having superior ball possession and looking more likely to win, but having to settle for a draw after all.

This sunny afternoon was the perfect setting for USA's impressive performance. Despite not scoring with some bizzare Jabulani bounces, they managed to shut the door into Slovenia's face and send them walking home with two nicely crafted goals: Donovan's dopietta. USA now stands on the first place and waits for Jabulani's help in front of Green's goal later this evening.

After the first round, all teams got stuck at the 1 point barrier. Uruguay took the initiative and climbed on the the first place, giving tonight's encounter the crucial title. Whoever won this was to join them with real chances of acceding in the 2nd round.
France opened the score quickly in the first half with a stunning strike from Ribery and Mexico just couldn't retaliate. The game then followed this edition of World Cup's pattern, delivering some boring periods of repeated passes witch led to no offensive outcome. Blanco's genius has left Mexico for good.

Nothing separates the 4 teams in Group A so far, but something surely aids the South Africans: the terrible Vuvulezas! Hated by most of the footballing world, they simply can't be banned and this World Cup is cursed to the end with the horrible background noise.
After a not so concluding performance against France, Uruguay finally showed the beauty of South American footbal. Played at its maximum fantasy level and with the optimum communication between the midfield and attack, it simply cannot be stopped. And so it happened tonight, the vuvuzela followers just could't cope with football at its best despite the berserking moments inspired by the creepy sound. 1-2 was the final score, after strikes from Forlan, Suarez and Eguren, while Digkacoi managed to summon a goal out of nowhere.

North Korea thought they can cause a major surprise by beating Brasil in the second game from Group G. North Korea are the lowest rank team in South Africa, while Brazil are the highest. It's also the second time when Korea DPR qualifies for the World Cup. Brazil expected to win this game and so they did. The north koreans couldn't stand the offensive force of Brazil. The first 15 minutes nothing happened, but untill the break, Brazil scored two, one from Robinho with a personal action and another one from Luis Fabiano (great header from Dani Alves's centering). The second half was even worse, Robinho realised the first hat trick of the tournament and Kaka put his name on the scorers list after executing a penalty free kick. Final score 5 - 0

Cote d’Ivoire are more than just Didier Drogba and proved to be a very strong opponent. The game finished 1-1 and the goals were scored first by Zokora and then Deco came with the equalizer with a shot from short range.

We will see what he is able to do in this first

We will see if they are strong enough to qualify for the next stage.

GERMANY vs. AUSTRALIA 3-1 (2-0)
Something a bit odd happened tonight. Germany's experience was replaced by a young enthusiasm uncommon to the Europeans and it was quite impressive how they rose to the challenge. The youngest starting 11 of the World Cup so far, provided an excellent display of modern football. So at the end of the 1st half the scoreline was 2-0, with strikes from Podolski and Muller. Australia just couldn't cope with the offensive runs of every and single German player. A lucky header of Cahill rose a bit the morale of the yellows, 2-1. One of the most experienced players on the field, Phillipe Lahm, dribbled his way on the left side and his perfect cross was met by the head of Klose, which closed the match. 3-1 was the final score and Germany just announced their entry in the World Cup race.

Two of the most spectacular teams from Europe and Africa met in what was about to be a very entertaining encounter. Many agreed that Serbia can make it to the title of the most pleasant surprise of the championship. Things started badly for them though and after a short period in which they dominated, Ghana managed to score, Ayew knocking it home from short range. Serbia became unpatien with every minute that passed and finally managed to equalise in a predictable way: corner - Vidic header. All in all a good game with two sides that showed they can go through from one of the most balanced groups.

Someone had to win! Both Slovenia and Algeria found today's match crucial. After England's draw with USA form last night, it was the best moment for any of them to take initiative in Group C. The Africans started with an offensive style but it was the Slovenians who stroke first, around 30 minutes into play, when Birsa's pace was too much for the Algerians. It was meant to end 0-2 with the first penalty kick awarded in this edition of the World Cup. A not so tensed match, in which the luckiest team managed to get hold of the 3 points in play.

England started in the position of slight favorites, but the matched proved everybody wrong. It was a close first half in which none of the teams could show their superiority. 1-1 was the score at half time with strikes from Gerrard, from just outside the box and DaMarcus Beasley just before the half time whistle. It was then USA's turn to take the lead after a speedy charge from Jozy Altidore that anded with an impossible to miss pass in front of the goal to landon Donovan. John Terry's header from corner switched the game to a draw and despite the offensive charges from both sides, the match ended 2-2.

It was obvoius to everybody that Nigeria had to assume the underdog state when they faced Argentina. And they just couldn't do more. Kun tested Enyeama straight from kickoff. It was the first sign that the Nigerian penalty box will be a very crowded place. The African defense could't take more of Messi's nippy footwork and it began, 1-0 for Argentina. The 1st half ended 2-0 though, after a great through pass by Mascherano right in front of the deadly Agüero. Maradona is all smiles for his son-in-law. It ended 3-0, Milito sending a well placed header right to the right top corner of an exhausted Nigerian team.

The Europeans just made an important step of becoming the ones that would join Argentina in the eight finals.

Finally, the sunny June 11 smiled at the world and declared the 2010 World Cup officialy started. As tradition says, the host country must play in the first game of the competition. And there they were, fighting for the first 3 points in play, South Africa and Mexico.
SOUTH AFRICA vs. MEXICO 1-1 (0-0)
It was a first half that the Mexicans dominated throughtly. Shots from Osoria, Vela and (2x) Hernandez disturbed not only the African defense but also rattled the bar, before going out (Dos Santos). Perreira's team only managed to shoot twice (Tshabalala and Digkagoi), both coming from quick counterattacks. Second half started as noone would have predicted, Pienaar took a freekick from out wide, similar to a corner, which Mokoena knocked home with a powerful header. 1-0 and an entire stadium went wild. Game shifted back to its originial flow and finally substitute Guardado managed to cut in from the left to place a nice ball to the keeper's right, Mexico have equalised. The African defense won't surrender again though, led by the scorer Mokoena, so succeding in getting a point in a match in which they were dominated for more than 90 minutes.

The first, scored quickly, before the 20th minute, by Anelka, after a right wing cross from Evra. The second, in the late 70's, when Forlan headed home a left wing cross from Pereira. The game was balanced overall, with both teams testing the opposition keepers several times ( 2x Forlan, Suarez & Eguren, Gourcuff, Anelka, 2x Ribery, Gallas). None of the teams should feel disappointed with the draw, thus joining South Africa and Mexico at 1 point each.
