THE FINAL

NETHERLANDS vs. SPAIN 2-1 (1-0)

Venue: Soccer City - Johannesburg
Weather: Cloudy
Attendance: 83,561

The most anticipated match of the competition brought together two European countries, that definitely proved themselves to be the most powerful national teams of the tournament, Netherlands and Spain.

Stekelenburg vs. Casillas (GK)
Van der Wiel vs. Ramos (DR)
Heitinga vs. Puyol (DC)
Mathijsen vs. Pique (DC)
Van Bronckhorst vs. Capdevilla (DL)
Van Bommel vs. Sergio (DMC)
De Yong vs. Alonso (DMC)
Sneijder vs. Xavi (MC)
Robben vs. Iniesta (AMC)
Kuyt vs. Pedro (AMC)
Van Persie vs. David Villa (ST)

Both Van Marwijk and Del Bosque went for an identical tactical display, both hoping for a creative spark from their offensive players that could make the difference. Ad they weren't wrong. The Netherlands put themselves one up when Robben's genius cross from the right met the head of Kuyt, leaving Iker with no other chance that to watch the ball as it went in off the underside of the bar. 1-0. That was the half time score and people start wondering is Paul the octopus' finally lost his intuition or if it it Torres that could save the lucky guesser?
It was indeed Torres that finally managed to equalize with 20 minutes to go but it wasn't a moment to last as Wesley Sneijder though about challenging Van Bronckhorst wonder goal from the semifinal with Uruguay. Same place, same foot, but far more cheers after the ball reached the net, after taking a deflection from Iker's right hand. 2-1 and Spain couldn't do anything more to change that. THE WORLD CUP GOES TO AMSTERDAM!

Last 4 - Matchday 6

Germany vs. Spain 7-5 p.s.o. (1-0 at halftime, 2-2 a.e.t.)

Both coaches had big decisions to make as they prepared for a re-run of the Euro 2008 final. For Germany, who will replace the suspended Thomas Mueller? For Spain, will they keep faith with Fernando Torres?
This was a real heavyweight clash and those selection decisions could have been the key. This looked like the tightest game so far, but German efficiency wasn't enough for Spanish style, who have done more attacking than anyone in this tournament according with the statistics.
It was a great night for football fans all over the world and after 90 minutes it was a draw. In the first half the germans took the lead after a great header from Miroslav Klose (german striker is now first along brazilian striker Ronaldo on the list of FIFA World Cup goalscorers). Spain scored the equalizer through David Villa, then the germans took the lead again and Iniesta settled for a draw in the last minutes of the game. The game decided after penalties and Cassilas was the hero of the night after two penalty saves. Spain are in the final and will face the Netherlands for the World Cup title.

Semifinals - Matchday 6

Uruguay vs. Netherlands 0-2 (0-1)

Uruguay took on the role of outsiders in the last four, after Luis Suarez's last-minute handball against Ghana helped deny Africa a first-ever semifinalist. Uruguay was the first time in the last 4 at a world championship since 1970.

The Netherlands were the only side left in South Africa with a 100 percent winning record, the Dutch had also won its last 13 competitive matches. The team looked good and prooved it's mental strength after conceding an early goal from Brazil. But coach Bert van Marwijk reminded his players of the 1992 European Championships, when Holland beat Germany 3-1 in the quarterfinals, only to lose on penalties to outsiders Denmark in the semifinals.

The South Americans' missing list was quite worrying with Suarez suspended for one game after his handball against Ghana, Jorge Fusile also suspended and captain Diego Lugano injured. The Netherlands were less worried from this point of view, with Demy de Zeeuw and Khalid Boulahrouz replacing the suspended Nigel de Jong and Gregory van der Wiel.

Uruguay looked tired after the long quarter final and Holland dominated them from the begining of the match. The Dutch also scored in the first half, through Robin van Persie, after a wonderfull race on his final after 32 years and will face the winner from the clash between Spain and Germany for the world cup title.right side. Urugay tried harder after half time, but the Dutch scored again after a great counter attack finalized by Kuyt with a well placed header. This it, the Dutch are in the final after 32 years.

MoM: Robin van Persie

Quarter Finals - Matchday 5

PARAGUAY vs. SPAIN 1-4 (0-2)

Surprise ahead! Paraguay will join Uruguay in the semis! Spain out! These were the predictions made by some inspired by the previous results in this stage of the World Cup. This so-called tipsters need to see behind the big names or the historical achievements and try to focus on football as played on the field solely.

0-1, 0-2, both Spanish goals happened so quickly that Paraguay defense could have still hoped for a clean sheet, just if the first 15 minutes could be ignored. They managed to keep hold on the game for the rest of the first half, but Villa's strike and Sergio Ramos' header will haunt them over the half time break. What happened in the 2nd half couldn't change the outcome but add to the show, Torres, followed by a late retaliation by Cardoso and a lovely finishing move by Llorente granted Spain the privilege to face the mighty Panzers.

MoM: Sergio Ramos

Quarter Finals - Matchday 5

ARGENTINA vs. GERMANY 0-1 (0-0)

Germany or Argentina, Bastian or Lionel, The Illusionist or The Spark, Europe or South America? The world has its eyes on Cape Town, the place where the big battle takes place. After a first quarter finals day in which Brazil and Ghana left the World Cup after two incredible matches, while Netherlands and Uruguay prepare themselves for a majestic clash in the semis, who will join who?

Maradona shook Loew's hand and the match got underway. First 20 minutes let us know that Jabulani can indeed be tamed by wizards and superheroes. What followed was a piece of football that deserves its place in the bookshelf next to the DVD with Pele's greatest moments and the Bible. No goal was harmed!
The second half rose the tempo and so the German-Polish Klose finally sneaked past Heinze to knock home a delicious looking cross from the German-Turkish Ozil. What followed was very predictable: tiny South Americans grabbing the ball and tying to pass through the gates of a huge Berlin looking wall. So not efficient! Kun's tears at the final didn't impress his father in law, who was far too busy to argue with each and everyone looking a bit like a referee. The Mannschaft did it and Europe marches forward to the final battle!

Quarter Finals - Matchday 5

URUGUAY vs. GHANA 2-1 (2-0)

After today shock, Brazil being kicked out after showing everyone why North Korea had every reason to feel aggravated at not equalizing them in the group stage, Uruguay will try to wash the shame of a South American football that almost proved to be most efficient. On the other hand Ghana has the entire Black continent cheering for them and that could prove to be exactly what they need to advance.

Match started with the usual acoustic background brought to you by The Vuvuzela Hysteria. Nothing could stop the goal twins Forlan and Suarez, which seemed to settle the match straight from the first half, 2-0. Ghana remembered the ultimate goal in the football game and clawed one back early in the 2nd half, with a lucky deflection from Asamoah. That was the final score though, cries of lions and giraffes from all over Africa being heard after ref's last whistle. First semifinal has been decided: Uruguay vs. Netherlands. Who will the Vuvuzelas support from now on?

MoM: D. Forlan

Quarter Finals - Matchday 5

Netherlands vs. Brazil 7-6 p.s.o. (1-1 ht / 2-2 ft)

The Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium hosted the clash between two pre-2010 FIFA World Cup favourites, the Netherlands and Brazil. These teams also met at the quarter - final and semi - final stages of the 1994 and 1998 World Cup editions and produced spectacular games. Brazil passed Netherlands each time and reached the final. Everyone was asking if Dunga's Seleção
will make it three in a row on Friday.

The game was full of passion and by the end of the first half each team managed to score once. Kaka scored first with a fine shot from over 18 yards and then Kuyt with a well placed header before the half time whistle. The second half had to goals also, one for every team. Luis Fabiano scored a goal after a mistake of the dutch defensive and then Robben came with the equalizer in the last two minutes of the game. In the extra time nothing happened, both teams being very cautious. In the end, the teams reached to the penalty shoot outs, where the Netherlands beat Brazil after a miss from Real Madrid's star, Kaka. That was it and the Dutch have now the strength to believe in their dream of winning the World Cup title.

SPAIN vs. PORTUGAL 2-1 (1-1)

Cape Town welcomed the two neighbouring countries in the last encounter of the first knockout round. Real Madrid's star player facing both his coleagues and his rivals from Barcelona as Spain and Portugal engaged in an epic battle.

Only 15 minutes took Spain to score the opening goal, Torres finally finding the way to the opponent's penalty area. C. Ronaldo equalised soon after, briging the two teams together at 1-1 before the half time whistle. The second half was somewhat of a exhausting fight for the ball, neither of the teams gaining a creativity advantage. Everything ended for Portugal when majestic Villa gathered his forces and unleashed a thunderous strike from around 30m right in the top corner of a hopeless Eduardo. There he was then, poor Ronaldo, crying like a baby after the final whistle. Thank you for that priceless image, Spain!

Last 16 - Matchday 4

PARAGUAY vs. JAPAN 0-1 AET (0-0 FT \ 0-0 HT)

Will Paraguay join the other 3 South American countries in the quarter finals or will Japan be the only Asian team to go through?

It was a balanced encounter, with Japan looking slightly more lively, but with Paraguay having the biggest chances of scoring. First half ended as it started, with score at 0-0. It was the 63rd minute when everyone thought the game has ended for Paraguay, Alcaraz being sent off. Not much after it was Japan's turn to lose a player, when Endo received the second yellow card. And there they were, both teams down to 10 men, at the start of the first period of extra time. Japan took initiative, and after 2 missed chances, another free kick got them in advantage, 1-0. Honda's superb shot finally made the differnece, despite Paraguay struggling till the end.

Last 16 - Matchday 4

Brazil vs Chile 2-1 a.e.t. (1-0 ht / 1-1 ft)

Brazil were cautious before their game against Chile - and they had every reason to be so, since Chile proved to be a tough opponent - holding out against the South Americans until the very end of the 90 minutes.

With Kaka in the starting line-up, the Brazilians had their ammunition in place but two cannons -Luis Fabiano and Robinho - were somewhat off-target. Luis Fabiano scored the only goal of the first half after a fast move originated by Kaka. Chile went right back in the game in the second half and finally managed to score one goal through Gonzalez. The incisive CSKA Moscow forward scored with a well placed shot from the edge of the box.

Seeing the game run into extra time is not what Brazil had expected. Dunga's team gathered what was left of their strength and scored the winning goal in the 103rd minute, setting themselves up for a quarter-final against The Netherlands in which they're likely to be less fresh than the Dutch.

Last 16 - Matchday 4

NETHERLANDS vs. SLOVAKIA 3-0 (2-0)

Many saw Slovakia as one of the victims of group F, alongside New Zealand, but they proved everyone different. The big test was to be against the Oranges, in the first phase of the knockout rounds.

Netherlands stood calm and precise knowing that if they play at their normal rate they won't have any problems advancing. And so it was, Sneijder and Kuyt gave theit team a 2 goal lead at half time and everyting was looking just right for Robben & co.
2 nd half was more like a training match for Van Marwijk's lads, which controlled it from start till the end, but only scoried once more, after a long range effort of v. Persie.

Last 16 - Matchday 4

ARGENTINA vs. MEXICO 3-1 (1-0)

It was to be the night of Messi. After 3 matches without scoring a goal, Lionel finally showed everyone what he's really capable of, despite being coached by Maradona. The match had a slow start, with both teams contemplating each other. Close to the first half end Messi started the show, taking a ball near the midfield line and dribbling his way into the penalty box where he unleashed a deadly shot, 1-0. Mexico just couldn't reply before half time.
It was 2-0 right after the beginning of the second half, Messi Magic did the trick again. Argentina finally won the match by two goals, Blanco reducing the lead, before Milito hitting the goal for the last time.

Last 16 - Matchday 4

GERMANY vs. ENGLAND 2-0 (1-0)

No it's not final day, it's just one of the shock encounters taking place far too early in the tournament. What were the odds for each team to progress? 50% each, specialists would say. This is what actually happened: both teams started with cautioness, waiting for the right moment to push forward. It was Germany who finally managed to get one in, after a seires of mistakes by the English defensive midfielders. Muller was the scorer and 1-0 was the score at half time.
England came back in the second half with a much more offensive approach, but still nothing changed on the scoreboard. Moreover Podolski doubled Germany's advantage with 10 minutes to go.

June 26, 2010

Last 16 - Matchday 4

USA - Ghana 2-1 (0-1)

USA were once again under pressure after a rather balanced first half in which Ghana took full advantage of their chances, unlike their opponents. It was 1-0 for the Africans thanks to Ayew's 20th minute goal. However, Ghana's first half efficiency was useless in the last part of the game, where they failed the test in front of an extremely offensive American team: Dempsey caused all sorts of problems for the African defence on his right wing and he finally managed to find the right pass for his team's first goal - when Altidore scored for 1-1. Ghana tried to push forward but the American defence was in good shape, especially Bocanegra who had some saving tackles. Donovan will surely be the new national hero in the U.S. after scoring the winning goal with only eight minutes remaining until the end of the game. The final was tense but USA goes through to the quarter finals after a close encounter.

SOUTH KOREA vs. URUGUAY 2-1 (1-1)

First match after the group stage faced the winner of Group A, Uruguay and South Korea, Group B runner up.
It was a close encounter with South Korea having the initiative, but Uruguay hitting them early on, 0-1. The equaliser came quickly with an impossible to save free kick. As proved in the early stages set pieces are the new speciality of Asian teams and the score at so the half time score stood at 1-1. The start of the second half had an identical course, Uruguay's top goalscorer, Forlan took advantage of a big error in the Asian defence and gave Uruguay the lead. The final score was 2-1, despite South Korea throwing everybody up.

Group H - Matchday 3

Chile vs. Spain 0-2(0-0)

Switzerland vs. Honduras 1-0(1-0)

Chile, Spain and Switzerland had still chances to win group H on goal difference before matcday 3 and Honduras still hoped to qualify. Chile was confident of securing the next stage, but standing in their way, however, are Group H rivals Spain, who bounced back from their opening reverse against Switzerland and will likely need all three points against the Chileans to reach the next phase. Spain was confident after they won six and drawn one of their seven meetings with Chile and made no mistakes in this game also. They assured first place of the group through David Villa's top goals from the second half.

The Swiss lost 1-0 from Chile in the second group game, and now they needed to beat bottom-placed Honduras and await the result of Chile vs. Spain to learn their fate. They did their job defeating Honduras with 1-0 after a goal scored by Barnetta in the first half, but it wasn't enough to go through. Spain won this group and in second came Chile to represent group H for the last 16.

Group G - Matchday 3

Portugal vs. Brazil 2-4(1-1)

Not only are Brazil and Portugal the first- and third-placed sides in the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking, the teams both went into this heavyweight duel on the back of two of the best performances so far at South Africa 2010. Brazil put in a clinical display when sinking Côte d’Ivoire 3-1, while Carlos Queiroz’s team cut loose to record a 7-0 victory over Korea DPR.
In this group the first place was still at stake for both sides. Even though a draw was enough for Brazil in order to win the group, Dunga's boys caught a great day and showed us why they are favourites at the start of every world tournament. This was a great game to see, Brazil won the match with 4-2 after a 1-1 draw at the half time. Luis Fabiano and Robinho scored a double each, and for Portugal, Liedson and Cristiano Ronaldo were in charge with the goals.

Korea DPR vs. Cote d'Ivoire 0-5(0-2)

In the second match of the group, the Elephants tried the miracle to reach the last 16, but for that, the africans needed a nine goal swing over the portuguese - in addition to win over the North Koreans and for Brazil over the Portugal. So, nine strikes separate Portugal and Côte d'Ivoire in goal-difference terms, so Didier Drogba and Co will be hoping Brazil can help them out by racking up a few efforts of their own. The Elephants did their best but not enough to qualify. They didn't succede to beat Portugal's record over Korea DPR, and stopped at 5 goals advantage.
The man of the match was Didier Drogba who scored 3 of the african goals.

June 24, 2010

Group E - Matchday 3

Denmark vs. Japan 1-1(0-1)

Cameroon vs. Netherlands 0-2(0-1)

In the most important group game we have Denmark vs. Japan, two teams without big individuals but with very good qualities as a team. Both Denmark and Japan were fighting for the next round, Denmark needed a victory, but for the asian side a draw was enough because of the only one goal difference. It looks like the goal difference counted for the place in this group and the Japanese qualified for the last 16 after a 1-1 draw against Olsen's team.

The other group game was more simple. The Netherlands had their place guaranteed for the second round and Cameroon was unable to progress any further. Bert van Marwijk used the standard formula and Holland won the game in an easy manner. At half time they already had one goal advantage and in the the second half Kuyt made it 2-0. The Netherlands qualified first from group E winning all the three group games.

Group F - Matchday 3

Slovakia - Italy 0-2 (0-1)

Paraguay - New Zealand 1-0 (0-0)

Two points from two games may represent an achievement for outsiders New Zealand in this group, but for Squadra Azzura it is a serious cause for concern. The world champions still haven't won any game this year, and the game against Slovakia should have been a new starting point for Lippi's team if they want to advance for the second stage and try to defend their title. And so it was for Italy, which won the game against the slovaks with 2-0 and showed a real improvement in their game. We all know that Italy is used with the slow starts at the final tournaments (for example when they won their 3 rd world title in 1982 they finished second in the group stage, after 3 draws with Poland, Cameroon and Peru) and after all they reach the eliminatory stages with very good chances of winning the tournament. Let's see if they are strong enough this year.

In the last game of this group Paraguay assured their group win in front of the ambitious side of the All Whites. Before the game All Whites hoped they can pass the group stage (a draw could have been enough for them too), but Paraguay wanted to be sure of the first place in group F in order to meet a weaker opponent in the next stage. The final score was 1-0 for the south americans after a late goal from striker Valdez.

June 23, 2010

Group D - Matchday 3

GHANA vs. GERMANY 0-2 (0-2)

AUSTRALIA vs. SERBIA 1-1 (1-3)

Yet another very balanced group comes to an end tonight, with every of the 4 teams having their chances to go through. It is also the group in which an African team has more than theoretical hopes to make their way into the last 16. Both Germany and Serbia start as favourites in tonight's clashes.

Although it was too early too tell, some may say that Germany's lead at halftime, 0-2 (2x Podolski), is enough to put them through. Looking at the other fixture, Australia's lead (Bresciano) was cancelled before the 2nd half by Serbia's counterattack (Jovanovic). It ended as most would have predict, with Germany and Serbia still paying for rooms in South Africa, as Ghana and Australia started packing and booking their flights home, Ghana 0-2 Germany, Australia 1-3 Serbia, with Krasic and Vidic scoring too.

Group C - Matchday 3

SLOVENIA vs. ENGLAND 1-2 (1-1)

USA vs. ALGERIA 1-1 (0-0)

It's now or never for all four teams of this group. It's only up to each of them whether they will go through or not. 3 points is all any of them needs apart from one scenario in which Algeria's win wouldn't count if England wins too.

The most balanced group in South Africa started as predicted and both matches started the 2nd half the same way they strated the match, with 2 draws: Slovenia 1-1 England (Birsa, Rooney) and USA 0-0 Algeria. It was all about the last 45 minutes and it was Algeria that took initiative, 0-1, Yebda. USA quickly equalised and settled the final score at 1-1, while Gerrard's strike in the dying seconds started the fiesta back on the island.

June 22, 2010

Group B - Matchday 3

NIGERIA vs. SOUTH KOREA 2-1 (1-0)

GREECE vs. ARGENTINA 1-3 (0-2)

2nd offensive line of the South Americans entered today to show El Pibe d'Oro they are all worth a place in the starting lineup of what many still see as the future world champions. On the other hand Argentina is the only country in Group B that guaranteed its place in the last 16 before the last fixtures. Nigeria vs. South Korea might decide the other team that joins Messi & co. in the next stage, Greece seeming unable to cope with whatever 8 other players play along the trio Kun-Milito-Messi.

The games started as everyone would have guessed, a fast goal by Kun Aguero, and a family reunited by happiness on the sidelines. At the end of the first half it was Argentina and Nigeria to go forward, with the spectacular goals of Obasi and Veron.
South Korea quickly equalised in the start of the 2nd half, after a stunning header from Ji-Sung Park and things started to look complicated for the Africans. Obasi became the new national hero, after bringing Nigeria ahead with 5 minutes to go. Katsouranis's goal was no more than a consolation highlight, score being 0-3 already, Milito doing his job again, as Mourinho taught him to.

MoM's: Obasi (NIG), Veron (ARG)

Group A - Matchday 3

FRANCE vs. SOUTH AFRICA 3-1 (1-1)

MEXICO vs. URUGUAY 0-0 (0-0)

It's about time to draw the line in Group A. Stop rubbing your eyes, France is indeed one tiny step away to its flight back to Europe, while South Africa might only leave the vuvuzelas further into the next stages to remind everybody who the hosts are. It is both Uruguay and Mexico that can split the fame with no concerns regarding the other match, a draw is what they need to walk into the Last 16 together.

France start was a bit too enthusiastic, and after Ribery's goal that could make a serious impact on the final table, South Africa's Mphala denied the advantage and brought the sides together again. Meanwhile Mexico and Uruguay stood still, staring at the golden draw. The European side of this group wouldn't give up and scored again twice after the break, with goals of Gignac and Gallas, while Blanco and Forlan were all smiles, exchanging t-shirts and cheering in front of the cameras after a not so outstanding goalless draw.

June 21, 2010

Group H - Matchday 2

Spain vs. Honduras 3-0(1-0)

After the defeat against Switzerland this game against Honduras was vital for Spain's hopes of reaching the round 16 at the 2010 FIFA World Cup. With Chile already qualified from Group H after the win over the swiss team, Spain was desperately seeking for the 3 points.
In the other side there was still a lot of confidence and before the game Rueda declared that Honduras was "beaten by the best and most difficult team in the group (Chile)" not being impressed by the european champions.
Nevertheless, Honduras didn't succeed any surprise and couldn't resist the spanish which used a very attacking formula with Torres and Villa up front from the start of the game, and Cesc Fabregas in midfield. The final score was 3-0 for Spain after David Villa's double and Sergio Ramos's header from a corner executed by Navas, and Spain are now back in the race for the World Cup trophy.

MoM: David Villa

Group G - Matchday 2

Portugal - Korea DPR 1-1(1-0)

The two sides met for the first time 44 years ago in a rollercoaster 5-3 win for the Iberian team, as Eusebio and Co had to pull out of all the stops after going three goals down. In their first world cup participation the koreans reached the quarter finals. This time they still hope for a big surprise, after the draw with Ronaldo's team. The final score was 1-1 after a brave match and a very well organized defensive of the asian team.

Group G - Matchday 2

Chile - Switzerland 1-0(0-0)

Chile was so good in their opening game against Honduras that most observers suggested that the 1-0 scoreline didn't reflect the true nature of the game. So, we have seen in Chile one of the few impressive teams in the first round of matches in the group stage of the World Cup.
Switzerland's defensive football against Spain showed how tight their backline can be and although Chile do have a very potent attackline, it was very tough to breach into the Swiss citadel.
Nothing happened untill half time and the score was 0-0. In the second half the south americans took the lead through a great shot from Suazo and the score remained 1-0 for Chile untill the end of the game.

Group G - Matchday 2

Brazil vs. Cote d'Ivoire 2-1(0-0)

It certainly wasn’t as many pundits predicted, but Brazil got their World Cup off to a winning start against North Korea last week. The Selecao were faced by an unknown quantity in their opening match, but Cote d’Ivoire provide Dunga’s men with an altogether more familiar foe in the second of Brazil’s ‘Group of Death’ encounters.
This is only Cote d’Ivoire’s second World Cup finals, but it’s also their second World Cup in the ‘Group of Death’. As virgins four years ago in Germany, the Elephants were eliminated early after defeats against Argentina and Netherlands, but this time around, they will be in with a chance right up until the final match, no matter what happens against Brazil. And so, Brazil is qualified after the second group game and Cote d'Ivoire will have to wait for the last game against North Korea.
The final score was 2-1 for Brazil with Robinho and Kaka scoring for Brazil and Didier Drogba for Cote d'Ivoire after a well executed free kick.

MoM: Kaka

Group F - Matchday 2

Italy vs New Zealand 2-0 (1-0)

Italy cruised to their first win in 2010 after two identical halves: Gilardino beat the crowded New Zealand defence after a wonderful through pass by de Rossi - 1-0. New Zealand had to open up more - and they did exactly that, but Smeltz couldn't take advantage of Buffon's absence. The New Zealand goalkeeper had problems with the troublesome Jabulani ball and he was finally beaten by Pepe's good cross for Iaquinta. New Zealand fought well but couldn't claim any points from the world champions.

Group F - Matchday 2

Slovakia vs. Paraguay 0-1 (0-1)

All four teams in Group F are tied on a single point, and with the Slovaks facing world champions Italy in the last match group, they surely took the game to Paraguay intersted only with the 3 points. So, this promised to be an entertaining game between two teams ready to win their first game at the 2010 FIFA World Cup and take a major stride towards the Round of 16.
Paraguay looked extremely organized and continued their successes at the half time, as they have done in their past two games. Roque Santa Cruz scored in the first half after a very well placed header. The slovaks tried to come back but they just weren't strong enough and remained with only one point after the first two matches of the group.

June 19, 2010

Group E - Matchday 2

Cameroon vs. Denmark 1-0 (0-0)

Neither of the teams started their 2010 FIFA World Cup™ campaign the way they would have dreamt, with both pointless after opening game defeats. The Danes defeat on Monday against the Netherlands meant that Denmark have now lost their last three games and, perhaps more worryingly, have failed to score in any of those defeats. The team didn't look better in the last
game of the day also, and said goodbye from the african world cup dream. The first half was very tight, with both teams excepting the opponent's mistake. In the end, Cameroon won their first 3
points at the African World Cup, after Samuel Eto'o proved his worth and scored a magnificent goal from a short range after dribbling two european defenders. Final score, 1-0 for the african team which will face the already qualified Netherlands in the last round of the group stage.

MoM: Samuel Eto'o

Group D - Matchday 2

Ghana vs Australia 1-1- (0-0)

The first half was rather poor in goal chances, except the injury of Annan which looked initially more serious than it turned out to be. Australia started the game without star player Cahill, but his absence wasn't felt since Kewell had an impressive second half, scoring his side's only goal after a good low cross by Bresciano. Ghana pushed throughout the whole game and finally equalised in the 65th minute when Ayew sent the ball past Schwarzer after dribbling past two defenders. It was an action-packed game in this complicated group, with Ghana having superior ball possession and looking more likely to win, but having to settle for a draw after all.

MoM: Jason Culina

Group E - Matchday 2

Netherlands vs Japan 3-1 (1-0)

Durban Durban stadium was the venue where the group E leaders met in what was the most entertaining match of the day. Both teams had confidently won their first WC games without conceding, so the fans were expecting a tight game with the Dutch in control. Looking to improve their game, Japan approached the match with caution and focused on a solid defending with pacey counter-attacks. They finally gave in to the Dutch hassle in the 33rd minute when Van der Vaart launched a through ball for Van Persie, who scored with a well placed shot from inside the penalty area: 1-0 at halftime. The second half was somewhat different: Japan actively looked for the goal and posed some serious problems to the Orange defence - de Jong had to commit a tactical foul to break up a fast Japanese attack and was penalised with a yellow card, having to miss the last group game against Cameroon. However, the ones to score were the Dutch, who took advantage of the wide spaces in the Japanese defence - with van Persie assisting Kuyt to his second goal at this World Cup. The Japanese didn't give up and pulled one back through Okubo's goal, who managed to pass the ball past Stekelenburg after receveing it from Endo. Feeling they could get more from this game, the Dutch regained the initiative and forced for a third goal - and they got it: van Persie scored his second goal of the game with a nicely curling free-kick from outside the area.

Group C - Matchday 2

ENGLAND vs. ALGERIA 1-1 (1-0)

Probably most of England's supporters couldn't find Algeria on the world map, but after this night their cruises in the Mediteranean won't ever be the same. Ryad Boudebouz's diving header will haunt them whenever their mind takes them back to the 2010 World Cup.
It seemed like an easy game for the Englishmen, but Lampard's goal just couldn't defend their lead forever. The Algerians equalised in the dying seconds and so Group C announces a most entertaining Matchday 3.

Group C - Matchday 2

SLOVENIA vs. USA 0-2 (0-1)

"Jabulani loves Slovenia, Jabulani loves USA.", this might be the finding of Matchday 1 in group C. Still USA-England was one of the finest performances displayed in South Africa so far, unlike Slovenia-Algeria, a boring run-around-the-ball game.
This sunny afternoon was the perfect setting for USA's impressive performance. Despite not scoring with some bizzare Jabulani bounces, they managed to shut the door into Slovenia's face and send them walking home with two nicely crafted goals: Donovan's dopietta. USA now stands on the first place and waits for Jabulani's help in front of Green's goal later this evening.

MoM: Landon Donovan

Group D - Matchday 2

GERMANY - SERBIA 2-2 (1-0)

Both European teams were considered to be the favourites in Group C, but at least for one of them, results from Matchday 1 didn't confirm the rumors at all. Serbia had a very bad start, losing the fixture against the second hardest opponent, Ghana. It was then or never for Radomir Antic's boys. Germany, on the other side, made a flying start in the World Cup, hammering Australia with an uncontested 4-0, biggest score in the tournament till then.
This match proved to be different from what we've seen last week: Serbia much more motivated and Germany much more careless. Still their Polish strike force made their voices heard again, both Podolski and Klose scoring one each, while Stankovic and Krasic replied and gave a glimmer of hope to every Serbian supporter.

Group A - Matchday 2

FRANCE vs. MEXICO 1-0 (1-0)

After the first round, all teams got stuck at the 1 point barrier. Uruguay took the initiative and climbed on the the first place, giving tonight's encounter the crucial title. Whoever won this was to join them with real chances of acceding in the 2nd round.
France opened the score quickly in the first half with a stunning strike from Ribery and Mexico just couldn't retaliate. The game then followed this edition of World Cup's pattern, delivering some boring periods of repeated passes witch led to no offensive outcome. Blanco's genius has left Mexico for good.

MoM: Franck Ribery

Group B - Matchday 2

GREECE vs. NIGERIA 0-0 (0-0)

The hunger for points was high in these two teams. They both started the tournament with defeats and moreover could not rise to the challenge of their opposition. It was a strange battle between a German captain with a Greek fleet and a Swedish chief with a Nigerian tribe. Strategy versus pace and strength, this epic fight ended as any other epic battle, undecided. Now both armies must regroup and strive to make the most out their last chance. The war is not over yet.

Group B - Matchday 2

ARGENTINA vs. SOUTH KOREA 3-0 (2-0)

"The unexpected can happen in this World Cup. I think there will be a shock. We are playing to win." said Park Ji-Sung before the much anticipated match that faced the two winners in Group B, Matchday 1. Park surely watched this World Cup edition, as there were plenty of surprises and we haven't reached the mid phase yet.
It wasn't the case today though, Argentina finally woke up and didn't have to wait for its central defenders to pull a wonderous goal from a set piece. Tevez took first blood, followed by Messi's long range chip shot, both leaving Sung-Ryong Jung stranded. 2-0 at half time and it was about to get worse. Heinze scored his second goal of the tournament and equalised Forlan's goalscoring record. Argentina will now face Greece in the last Matchday from a very relaxed position.

Group A - Matchday 2

SOUTH AFRICA vs. URUGUAY 1-3 (0-2)

Nothing separates the 4 teams in Group A so far, but something surely aids the South Africans: the terrible Vuvulezas! Hated by most of the footballing world, they simply can't be banned and this World Cup is cursed to the end with the horrible background noise.
After a not so concluding performance against France, Uruguay finally showed the beauty of South American footbal. Played at its maximum fantasy level and with the optimum communication between the midfield and attack, it simply cannot be stopped. And so it happened tonight, the vuvuzela followers just could't cope with football at its best despite the berserking moments inspired by the creepy sound. 1-2 was the final score, after strikes from Forlan, Suarez and Eguren, while Digkacoi managed to summon a goal out of nowhere.

Group H - Matchday 1

Spain VS. Switzerland 2-0 (0-0)

"Little Switzerland will annoy the favorites," Hitzfeld said before the game, aware of the odds favoring Spain to win the World Cup. No other specifications from Switzerland's coach about what this meant. So, Switzerland started the game in a very defensive formula aware of Spain's offensive force and thinking of the stats regarding the games they played before against the spanish national team: 18 games, 15 wins for the European champions and 3 draws. In the first half nobody scored
but after the break, Spain stared to look like one of the favourites of this tournament. The final score was 2-0, both goals scored by Striker David Villa after two great passes from Xavi.

Honduras VS. Chile 0-2 (0-1)

Coach Bielsa's dynamic and much heralded 3-3-1-3 formation - in which one of the three midfielders protects the backline with the other two joining the attack down the flanks with the idea of playing the entire game in the opposition's half was successful in the opening game of group H. Honduras couldn't resist the first quarter when Chile took the lead with a magnificent goal from Udinese's striker Alexis Sanchez. In the second half la Roja dominated the match also and realised
in the end a 2-0 victory after midfielder Millar put his name on the scoring list.

Group Preview

Spain are one of the favourites at the South African WC 2010 but they are aware not to expect any easy ride in their opening World Cup tie against Switzerland. All of Vincente del Bosque's squad have signed contracts in the spanish liga and are confident about this tournament. Last week's 6-0 demolition of Poland represented the perfect send-off for a mature and settled side that has been boosted by the recent return to fitness of Fernando Torres and Cesc Fabregas, both of whom have shaken off worrying late-season injuries.

Some observers suggest that Chile will be one of the more intriguing sides to watch in this World Cup. But the south americans have advanced only once beyond the World Cup group stage in six attempts outside of their own country; that was in 1998 when they reached the last 16.However, pitted in a group in which Spain are the only clear favorites, la Roja should be confident of taking points off both Honduras and Switzerland.

The Swiss have plenty of injury problems and Alexander Frei and Valon Behrami were out, forcing Ottmar Hitzfeld to reshuffle his pack. Switzerland's recent form is also a cause for concern, and last results raised doubts about their ability to reach the second stage. The first game is against Spain, one of the favourites for this World Cup and if they can manage a draw they will have to face the south americans for the second place.

For Honduras is the second time in their history that the central American side have qualified for the World Cup. The last time they did was 28 years ago in 1982. That time the Catrachos eventually were knocked out in group stage, but not before they had held hosts Spain to a draw in their opening game. This time around too Honduras have Spain in their group, although their opening game is against Chile on Wednesday.

Group G - Matchday 1

Brazil VS. Korea DPR 5-0(2-0)

North Korea thought they can cause a major surprise by beating Brasil in the second game from Group G. North Korea are the lowest rank team in South Africa, while Brazil are the highest. It's also the second time when Korea DPR qualifies for the World Cup. Brazil expected to win this game and so they did. The north koreans couldn't stand the offensive force of Brazil. The first 15 minutes nothing happened, but untill the break, Brazil scored two, one from Robinho with a personal action and another one from Luis Fabiano (great header from Dani Alves's centering). The second half was even worse, Robinho realised the first hat trick of the tournament and Kaka put his name on the scorers list after executing a penalty free kick. Final score 5 - 0

Group G - Matchday 1

Cote d'Ivoire VS. Portugal

The match between Côte d’Ivoire and Portugal featured no fewer than five Chelsea players: Ricardo Carvalho, Paulo Ferreira and Deco lined up in the Portuguese team, against club colleagues Salomon Kalou and the Ivorian talisman Didier Drogba which was still doubtful before the game.
It is known that Portugal have not always been at their best in the warm-up games, so the draw is a good result for both teams. Cote d’Ivoire are more than just Didier Drogba and proved to be a very strong opponent. The game finished 1-1 and the goals were scored first by Zokora and then Deco came with the equalizer with a shot from short range.

Group Preview

This group is better known as the ‘Group of Death’, kicks off with a fascinating fixture between
Cote d’Ivoire and Portugal, the two sides expected to battle it out for the right to qualify in second place behind the 5 times World Champions, Brazil.

Drawing a pool of players from many of Europe’s strongest leagues, the Ivorians are certainly not a team to be dismissed, but without Drogba’s cutting edge they are definitely a little more restricted. No other Elephant can match the scoring power of the 32-year-old. Still, Cote d’Ivoire, who are competing in just their second World Cup, have never been shut-out
in the Finals previously, and they are hoping to reach the knockout
round again.

Portugal’s ‘Golden Generation’ may be a thing of the past, but there are still hopes that Carlos Queiroz’s present vintage can go deep into the World Cup, inspired largely by the presence of the world’s most expensive player, Cristiano Ronaldo. ‘CR9’ will hope that Tuesday’s match is simply the first step to world glory. We will see what he is able to do in this first
clash of the World Cup.

Brazil doesn't need any other presentations and they want for sure to add another world title to their already impressive collection. But first of all, they have to pass group G, where Cote d'Ivoire and Portugal will not surrender that easily. The ambition will be even greater for coach Dunga who tries to attempt to become the second man who wins the world cup, both as a captain of the team and as a coach too.

Forty-four years since their last World Cup Finals appearance, Korea DPR could not have wished for a more difficult return to the global stage than a group with those three. They surprised the world of football in England 1966, when they reached the quarter finals. Who knows what they are capable of this time?

Group F - Matchday 1

New Zealand vs. Slovakia 0-3 (0-1)

New Zealand hass returned to the World Cup Stage for the first time since its debut appearance in 1982. Slovakia has its first international tournament as an independent nation. These two teams were considered outsiders in Group F along Italy, the world champions, and the more experienced south americans. But today, they had a very good chance in taking the lead of this group after Matchday 1. The All Whites were confident about this game looking back on a recent 1 - 0 win over Serbia, but it wasn't enough. The All Whites just couldn't resist players like Martin Skrtel, Stanislav Sestak, Marek Hamsik, players from the european top championships. The Slovaks took the lead in the first half after a great race of midfilder Hamsik, finished in a great goal by striker Sestak. In the second half nothing changed and the slovaks prooved they can be a real threat for the favourites of this group. Jan Kozak, Poli Timisoara's midfielder gave an advantage of 2-0 for the slovaks after a good strike from 20 m, and in the end, Sestak made the double, after a great combination with young Miroslav Stoch, winner of the Dutch championship with Twente Enschede.

Group F - Matchday 1

Italy vs. Paraguay 1-1 (0-0)

Key midfielder Andrea Pirlo was out and, with a distinct lack of creativity in midfield and in attack, Lippi's side struggled the first game of this tournament. The game didn't promise to be too exciting, especially from Italy's side and so it was. Even though the south Americans had a history of failing to impress against the bigger nations, they succeed to gain one point from the first game of Group G. So, Paraguay scored first in the second half after a well placed header of Cruz, but squadra azzura respected their name and scored in the end of the game, when stirker Alberto Gilardino took the chance and scored an equalizer after an error of the Albirroja defensive.

Marcello Lippi's decision to omit such talent as Antonio Cassano, Mario Balotelli and Francesco Totti from his squad panel has led to some bookmakers offering them as low as 16-1 to repeat their 2006 Berlin triumph. Those odds have not been improved by the untimely calf injury suffered by midfielder Andrea Pirlo, which will sideline him for at least the Italians' first two group games. Squadra Azzura starts tonight to defend their title and they are favourites to win this group.
Paraguay qualified for the 2010 World Cup finals on the penultimate day of the South American qualifying campaign. The Albirroja finished third in the CONMEBOL zone behind Brazil and Chile but ahead of Argentina and Uruguay. The South Americans will be without an important player in striker Salvador Cabanas, their top scorer in qualifying, after he was shot in the head in January, but Valdez revealed that Paraguay have taken inspiration from his recovery.
Slovakia are on the verge of playing their first ever match at a FIFA World Cup finals as an independent nation, and the first opponent couldn’t be a better one. After they proved their worth in the qualifying matches the Slovaks are confident they can beat any team on a good day. They know that the fact that they are participating this world tournament is already a big achievement, and players like Skrtel (the Liverpool defender) or the VFL Bochum’s striker Sestak, will try to lead on their team in the second stage.
The All Whites' previous experience in a final tournament is best to be forgotten, their three matches in 1982 resulting in three defeats, but a surprise 1-0 win over Serbia and narrow loss to Australia recently have raised hopes among New Zealand fans that their team might not be the Group F whipping boys. We wish them good luck!

Group E - Matchday 1

JAPAN vs. CAMEROON 0-1 (0-0)

Japan, winners of three of the last five editions of the AFC Asian Cup and Cameroon, most succesfull African team in the World Cup’s history, met in the second group E game. Takeshi Okada said that Japan’s main target at this World Cup is to reach the semi – finals, even though they lost the last four friendly matches before the start of the competition. The Lions had a good start, but the first half ended in a white draw. Nothing else to remember from this game, only the shot from short range of striker’s Samuel Eto’o which gave the africam team the 1-0 advantage. That was it for matchday 1 of this group and it looks like the favourites confirmed in their first matches.

Group E - Matchday 1

NETHERLANDS vs. DENMARK 2-0 (1-0)

However it was obvious that the Netherlands have an advantage over the Danes, these two national teams shared their wins (two a piece) from five competitive games, while each of them tasted success in the 1988 and 1992 editions of the European Championship. So, statistically, these two were even, but this time the danes experience couldn’t resist Bert van Marwijk’s team hunger for glory. It was clear from the first quarter that the Danes considered a draw like the best result in this game, but the Dutch didn’t agree. The first half finished 1-0 for the dutch with a great strike of Robin van Persie from about 18 metres. In the second one, the Danes just couldn’t resist their dutch opponents and took another goal from Real Madrid’s attacking midfielder Rafael van der Vaart after a great race on his left side. The game finished as it started with the dutch team in their opponent’s half and the Netherlands are happy to start the World Cup with a clear victory.

If you look at the Dutch side over the years they are the best team in the world who have never won a World Cup. As other final tournaments they have played before, the Netherlands go into this World Cup as one of the favourites. They are confident in winning this group after a flawless qualifier campaign.
Cameroon is the most succesfull African team in the World Cup’s history. They can really be a threat for the other teams in group E because they have in Samuel Eto’o one of the best pure striker the world. The African team has a lot of other talents as well, but Samuel Eto’o is the man who can absolutely lead Cameroon to the promise land of the next stage.
Denmark has an experienced team under Martin Olsen and they promise a lot after winning the qualification group over Portugal. The Danes can benefit Martin Olsen’s international experience which took the national helm in 2000, or the inspiration of players such as Daniel Agger, Denis Rommedahl or the veteran Jon Dahl Tomasson. We will see if they are strong enough to qualify for the next stage.
Japan has a squad where we recognize some talents like Nakamura aged 31 who currently plays for Yokohama Marinos or Makoto Hasebe player of VFL Wolfsburg, in the strong Bundesliga. They are one of the strongest squad in Asian football, winners of three of the last five editions of the AFC Asian Cup, but in my opinion, the asian squad isi not strong enough to repeat the 2002 performance where they reached the second stage.

Group D - Matchday 1

GERMANY vs. AUSTRALIA 3-1 (2-0)

Something a bit odd happened tonight. Germany's experience was replaced by a young enthusiasm uncommon to the Europeans and it was quite impressive how they rose to the challenge. The youngest starting 11 of the World Cup so far, provided an excellent display of modern football. So at the end of the 1st half the scoreline was 2-0, with strikes from Podolski and Muller. Australia just couldn't cope with the offensive runs of every and single German player. A lucky header of Cahill rose a bit the morale of the yellows, 2-1. One of the most experienced players on the field, Phillipe Lahm, dribbled his way on the left side and his perfect cross was met by the head of Klose, which closed the match. 3-1 was the final score and Germany just announced their entry in the World Cup race.

SERBIA vs. GHANA 1-1 (0-1)

Two of the most spectacular teams from Europe and Africa met in what was about to be a very entertaining encounter. Many agreed that Serbia can make it to the title of the most pleasant surprise of the championship. Things started badly for them though and after a short period in which they dominated, Ghana managed to score, Ayew knocking it home from short range. Serbia became unpatien with every minute that passed and finally managed to equalise in a predictable way: corner - Vidic header. All in all a good game with two sides that showed they can go through from one of the most balanced groups.

ALGERIA vs. SLOVENIA

Someone had to win! Both Slovenia and Algeria found today's match crucial. After England's draw with USA form last night, it was the best moment for any of them to take initiative in Group C. The Africans started with an offensive style but it was the Slovenians who stroke first, around 30 minutes into play, when Birsa's pace was too much for the Algerians. It was meant to end 0-2 with the first penalty kick awarded in this edition of the World Cup. A not so tensed match, in which the luckiest team managed to get hold of the 3 points in play.

Group C derby as most people would say brought together the two English talking countries in a historical encounter. England started in the position of slight favorites, but the matched proved everybody wrong. It was a close first half in which none of the teams could show their superiority. 1-1 was the score at half time with strikes from Gerrard, from just outside the box and DaMarcus Beasley just before the half time whistle. It was then USA's turn to take the lead after a speedy charge from Jozy Altidore that anded with an impossible to miss pass in front of the goal to landon Donovan. John Terry's header from corner switched the game to a draw and despite the offensive charges from both sides, the match ended 2-2.

ARGENTINA vs. NIGERIA 3-0 (2-0)

It was obvoius to everybody that Nigeria had to assume the underdog state when they faced Argentina. And they just couldn't do more. Kun tested Enyeama straight from kickoff. It was the first sign that the Nigerian penalty box will be a very crowded place. The African defense could't take more of Messi's nippy footwork and it began, 1-0 for Argentina. The 1st half ended 2-0 though, after a great through pass by Mascherano right in front of the deadly Agüero. Maradona is all smiles for his son-in-law. It ended 3-0, Milito sending a well placed header right to the right top corner of an exhausted Nigerian team.

KOREA REPUBLIC - GREECE 0-2 (0-2)

The European 2006 champions stunned everybody with a great match. Who would have ever guessed that the team that invented 10-0-1 could display such an enthusiastic play? The poor Koreans just couldn't handle Karagounis' thirst for goals. He was everywhere, the Spartan made a deadly weapon out of every ball that would reach him. The show was started with an incredible 25 meters shot that Lee Woon Jae never saw. 2-0 came after an outstanding one-two between Karagounis and Ninis, the first sidestepping the gk before netting the decisive goal. The Europeans just made an important step of becoming the ones that would join Argentina in the eight finals.

This is one of the groups where 4 different continents sent their own football style to prevail against the others. Argentina is by far the favourite team in Group B despite the fact that Maradona is still managing them. Messi's genius alone should be enough to take the South Americans to the next stage. The other 3 nations will have to battle between eachother in order to finish second. Nonetheless there will be some close encounters, some saying that the African physical skills will be most important, others betting on the Asian determination, while the rest go with Greek tactics and experience.

Group A - Matchday 1

Finally, the sunny June 11 smiled at the world and declared the 2010 World Cup officialy started. As tradition says, the host country must play in the first game of the competition. And there they were, fighting for the first 3 points in play, South Africa and Mexico.

SOUTH AFRICA vs. MEXICO 1-1 (0-0)

It was a first half that the Mexicans dominated throughtly. Shots from Osoria, Vela and (2x) Hernandez disturbed not only the African defense but also rattled the bar, before going out (Dos Santos). Perreira's team only managed to shoot twice (Tshabalala and Digkagoi), both coming from quick counterattacks. Second half started as noone would have predicted, Pienaar took a freekick from out wide, similar to a corner, which Mokoena knocked home with a powerful header. 1-0 and an entire stadium went wild. Game shifted back to its originial flow and finally substitute Guardado managed to cut in from the left to place a nice ball to the keeper's right, Mexico have equalised. The African defense won't surrender again though, led by the scorer Mokoena, so succeding in getting a point in a match in which they were dominated for more than 90 minutes.

MoM: Aaron Mokoena

URUGUAY vs. FRANCE 1-1 (0-1)

What was meant to be a spectacular encounter, with two attacking formations battling to get that one goal ahead, ended with just two identical goals. The first, scored quickly, before the 20th minute, by Anelka, after a right wing cross from Evra. The second, in the late 70's, when Forlan headed home a left wing cross from Pereira. The game was balanced overall, with both teams testing the opposition keepers several times ( 2x Forlan, Suarez & Eguren, Gourcuff, Anelka, 2x Ribery, Gallas). None of the teams should feel disappointed with the draw, thus joining South Africa and Mexico at 1 point each.

Van Gaal VS Mourinho

Maybe the most anticipated duel of this night, it brought together the two highly regarded and most successful European managers of this season. Having won every competition they were engaged , neither of them wanted the ultimate trophy to slip through their fingers.

The Dutchman started the match with an apparently balanced formation, opting for a classic 4-4-2, most of the balls being played towards the two wingers, Robben and Altintop. Van Buyten's and Demichelis' aerial play was also considered a key point of their set pieces. Van Bommel would have played the midfield destroyer role, most of time even man marking Inter's creative man, Sneijder.

The Special One opted for a more attacking play, but in the same time trying to take out Robben and Olic, the two main threats posed by Bayern. He insisted over using Chivu on the left flank, often man marking the ex-Real Madrid player. Most of the ball being filtered by the genius lef foot of Sneijder, they were targeted towards the trio, Eto'o-Pandev-Milito. Also Eto'o swapped positions with Pandev on the right side, on many occasions one of them being assigned with more defensive roles trying to break down Schweinsteiger's runs, helping Zanetti in what could have often turn out into 2 on 1 situations.
